CITY OF LAKEWOOD LAUNCHES LAKEWOOD RADIO ON 1660 AM
The City of Lakewood recently launched Lakewood Radio, Lakewood’s Emergency and Community Radio Station on 1660 AM. The primary purpose of this radio station will be to provide information to residents in the event there is an emergency. When there is not an emergency, the station will offer community information about the City of Lakewood including upcoming events and other helpful information provided by City Departments.
In an emergency situation, the Lakewood Fire and Police Departments will provide breaking news, information and instruction on 1660 AM. This station will also broadcast emergency weather information from the national weather service.
In the event of a major power blackout or other large-scale situation, Lakewood residents are encouraged to tune to this radio station for important information.
“We are pleased to be launching Lakewood Radio,” stated Mayor George. “This station will be used to provide important emergency and community information to our residents. I urge all residents to listen to 1660 AM on a regular basis to receive important community information and become familiar with the station so that in the event of an emergency, this is the first place they go for information.”
- During my first campaign for mayor, I stressed the idea of ìSafety Firstî. We are bordered on two sides by Americaís poorest city, which puts Lakewood at risk for higher crime. Our city cannot be viable if citizens do not feel safe in their homes and neighborhoods. When I took office, I quickly restored our safety forces to their full strength.
- In 2007 we implemented steps to further improve response time. Lakewood Patrol Officers have begun working 12 hour shifts instead of 8 hour shifts in order to increase coverage during peak hours. This change allows for increased assignment flexibility, thereby allowing additional police to be assigned to areas requiring additional intervention.
- I led the effort to form CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). CERT trains Lakewood volunteers to help the fire and police departments and assist the Red Cross in case of natural disaster or other emergency. The team was successfully used during an incident on Frye Avenue.
